A Brief History of Hamilton Memorial Park

1834

The first parcel of land (120 acres) that will become HMP is purchased in the public land sale by James Raines on January 29. Abner McCarty squares off the parcels by buying the neighboring land to the west and south of Raines’s second parcel on December 22. (See map, compiled in 1966, at the Westfield Historical Society)

1866

By 1866 the land has changed owners. M.S. Hoskins is the owner of the former Raines 80 acres site. The western half of the future HMP site has been parceled down between J. Jester, and M. Rich who owns land in the middle of the two Jester parcels. (The map is a little hard to read) The survey map of Hamilton County for this information is published by C.A.O. McClellan & C.S. Warner and is on display at the Westfield Historical Society.

1960's

Westfield native Jim Peyton remembers cutting the four-acre Guion yard on a riding lawn mower at a time when most people cut their own. Peyton guessed the couple were in their 60s at that time. He remembers Mr. Guion farming the land. He remembers their home set back from the road, and that the cemetery’s western entrance is where their driveway was located.

1989

A 120-acre farm belonging to the Guion family along Hwy. 32 in Westfield is purchased by the Floral Park Cemetery Assn. for $1,325,000 ($11,002 per acre). There are three homes and a barn standing on the property. The purchase, at the advice of broker Mo Thomas, was in process for about a year. Part of the agreement was for Mrs. Guion to stay in her home on the property for as long as she wanted.

1995

November 4th. The dedication of the cemetery was held in an unusual fashion. Instead of a ribbon cutting, the old Guion barn was burned as an exercise for the Westfield Fire Department. Cars along the highway stopped to watch the excise as the flames got a little out of control. Attendees stayed warm as firemen gallantly fought and controlled the blaze. Embers floated through the air for more than an hour.

Work starts on the first phase of development. The plan was developed by Paul Sweeney, Floral Park Cemetery Association’s former board chairman, Tim Elson, general manager, and general contractor Tom Marten.

1997

October 18th. A dedication event is held in the new Lakeview Mausoleum Chapel. Board members Judge Paul H. Buchanan, Jr. and Bruce W. Buchanan deliver remarks, as does the general manager Timothy Elson.

The lakeview building was designed and built by Gibraltar Mausoleum Construction Company. The building’s designer was Robert Gray, the father of Buchanan Group’s family service advisor at Hamilton Memorial Park, Kelsey Ehrgott. She started with the company in 2010 and was stationed at Hamilton Memorial Park beginning in 2020.

1998

Dick McDivitt, a resident of Westfield who lived close to the cemetery, joined as manager. He retired in 2014.

1999 (approximately)

Mrs. Guion moves out of her home and the building is demolished. The house sat along the highway on the western end of the parcel. That six acres was sold.

2001

On December 31st, the Floral Park Cemetery Association is merged with the Washington Park Cemetery Association and is dissolved.

2002

The first funeral on the property is held for Bill Peyton in April through Flanner Buchanan – Carmel. Dick McDivitt was approached by the family to coordinate the funeral because the family did not want to use Westfield’s only funeral home, McMullen. This request led to future funerals conducted in our Lakeview Mausoleum Chapel.

2022

Prairie Waters event center is opened. The facility is uniquely designed to serve both community (weddings in particular) and funeral, memorial service, and celebration of life events. It is 12,500 sq. feet with a main event room, a garden suite, a terrace overlooking the lake, and a front gallery. The building also contains the cemetery office.

The first funeral event was a memorial service for Raymond Hendrix on August 19th. The funeral was arranged by Jamie Weyer, Flanner Buchanan’s managing director at Prairie Waters.

Flanner Buchanan’s locations and resources make everything more convenient for families. That’s because, after nearly 150 years in the business, we’ve learned how to streamline the process.

When a service takes place, there are hundreds of tasks and details which must be coordinated and accomplished in a short period of time. Families have found choosing Flanner Buchanan is the best choice because of the convenience of having all of their planning and service needs in one location.
